Wellness

I am a bath person. The edge of my tub is like some kind of cocktail cabinet, with oils, bubbles, essences, salts and even bombs. There are scented candles of course. I’ve even got a bath pillow (from the Body Shop). This is what happens when you are an escapist with too many commitments. A good soak a few times a week seems the way to withdraw. So I read with total delight that this habit is not only good for my sanity, it’s great for health too. Read Peta Bee’s report to find out more.

What we’re reading: 15-minute Vegan by Katy Beskow
For some of us, it’s not the lack of meat that puts us off vegan cooking, but the lengthy, complicated, time-consuming recipes. The cook and food writer Katy Beskow’s simple, speedy recipes are not only mouthwatering, but they’ll save you some money too.

Spa of the week: Kohler Waters Spa at the Old Course Hotel, St Andrews
Carol Lewis
The spa at the Old Course Hotel has just been refurbished and extended. Sprawling, it now spans 25,000 sq ft. The 13 treatment rooms (two with twin beds), relaxation room, changing rooms, thermal suite and pool are along two identical winding corridors lined with candles. There is also a rooftop hot tub and sun terrace — which I found by accident.

You’re never far from water. The spa has a 20m pool, but if you feel the urge to swim you are probably better off going next door to the new gym and leisure club, which has another 20m pool. The spa pool seems more for relaxing than swimming. A hydrotherapy suite has hot tubs, steamroom, sauna and plunge pool.
Most of the many treatments involve either Voya, an Irish range of products that incorporate seaweed, or Phytomer, a French brand that has marine extracts. I had the Sok Overflowing Bath with Massage (90 minutes, £148). You start the treatment in an overflowing bath (as the name suggests), which leaves you floating as lights change colour. After I was coaxed out of the bath, having begged several time extensions, I had a very good deep massage that undid the knots in my shoulders. I have never felt so relaxed and my skin and hair were silky smooth.

Carol Lewis was a guest of the Old Course Hotel, where B&B doubles cost from £150 a night (oldcoursehotel.co.uk)
